Saturday!

Psycho (remake 1998 ; 109 brain eaters) : Normally when it comes to my graverites I usually never go with remakes but what can I say, this is one of my favorite horror remake. I am a huge fan of the original 1960's Alfred Hitchcock film, it's a really great classic with a good creepy feel. I feel that the remake does it justice. It does a few things that Hitchcock wanted to do but couldn't do due to technology and other things.
This film was produced and directed by Gus Van Sant adapted from the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch (just like the original). Unlike most remakes which usually take a different approach this film is pretty much the exact same film. They added color, gave it a new and might I say amazing cast and a few slight changes but really stuck to the original story which was inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein. The cast is made up of Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates, Anne Heche as Marion Crane, William H. Macy as Milton Arbogast, Julianne Moore as Lila Crane, Viggo Mortensen as Samuel "Sam" Loomis and so on. This film had a budget of $60 million and grossed close to $38 million, not doing as well in the box office as they wanted. It received so many bad reviews for being a shot-for-shot remake. The soundtrack was made up of Danny Elfman's re-recordings of some of Bernard Hermann's score from the original film and a bunch of other great songs from other artist (def. a great pick for horror movie soundtrack fans like myself).
Marion Crane, a young secretary whose boyfriend Sam Loomis has troubles paying off a debt and his wife's alimony. One day, a rich client of her boss buys a house with $400,000 in cash. To fix her problems, Marion steals the money on the way to the bank and heads out to California to live her dream life with Sam. But she gets lost in a bad storm and stops at the Bates Motel. The motel owner Norman Bates lives a very troubled life with his dominating mother, whom he lives with in their house on the hill next to the motel. A week later, Marion has vanished and no one can find her or the stolen money, not even Sam, her sister, Lila, or a private detective who has been hired to find Marion and the money. But a deadly secret is waiting to be discovered inside the Bates house.
