Hairspray (1988 ; 91 Brain Eaters) : Avery campy comedy film written and directed by John Waters (can you tell I'm on a John Waters kick). He derived the film partly from real events, the Corny Collins Show is based on the real-life The Buddy Deane Show, and the film's climax is based on an actual event that took place on that show in the summer of 1963. This film has one of the best casts, it stars Divine, Ricki Lake, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Michael St. Gerard, Leslie Ann Powers, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Clayton Prince, Mink Stole, Ruth Brown, Shawn Thompson, Joann Havrilla, Alan J. Wendl and so on. Plus you have other really great people in this film and you get a cameo from John Waters as the psychiatrist and Ric Ocasek from The Cars appears in a scene as a beatnik. This film has one of the mildest ratings (PG) for a John Waters film. It had a budget for around 2 million and grossed around 8 million. When released on video it got an even bigger audience and is now considered a cult classic.
Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland 'Pleasantly Plump' teenager Tracy Turnblad achieves her dream of becoming a regular on the Corny Collins Dance Show. Now a teen hero, she starts using her fame to speak out for the causes she believes in, most of all integration. In doing so, she earns the wrath of the show's former star, Amber Von Tussle, as well as Amber's manipulative, pro-segregation parents. The rivalry comes to a head as Amber and Tracy vie for the title of Miss Auto Show 1963.
In 2002, the film was adapted into a Broadway musical of the same name, and than in 2007 a second film version of Hairspray, an adaptation of the stage musical was released by New Line Cinema. The new movie is a musical but still really fun to watch.
