The Runaways (2010; 106 mins.) : I was so excited about this movie, I ended up loving it. I will say I think you need to be a Runaways fan to really enjoy the movie since it is based off the book that Cherie Currie wrote. I think they were right on with the casting, I was a little unsure when I first heard who was playing who. But I think that casting was prefect. I can see this movie not being for everyone though. The film was written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, it has Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, Stella Maeve as Sandy West, Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, and Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley. It reminds me a lot of the The Fabulous Stains movie which I love as well. Taking place from 1975 to 1977. Kim Fowley brings together the beautiful blond Bowie fanatic Cherie with raven-haired rocker Joan Jett. The Runaways were an all girl rock band of the 1970's who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments, paving the way for the all-girl outfits. With a mother in Singapore and a perpetually drunk father, Cherie and her sister Marie, must fend for themselves. When the group heads out on tour, there's no adult supervision, leading to drinking and drugging from California to Japan, where the crowds go wild, but just as they're taking off in public, they're falling apart in private. Cherie tires of Fowley's tough-love tactics, while her bandmates resent the focus on their sexpot singer. After Japanese tour the band falls apart, their success was earth-shaking in rock music, changing the rules forever. The movie focuses on Cherie so you don't get a good back story on the rest of the band but it's not a bad thing. All and all I liked this movie and def. recommend it if your a fan of The Runaways and/or Joan Jett. I give this a 10!
