Saturday!

BubbaHo-Tep (2002 ; 92 Brain Eaters) : This comedy was co-written, produced, and directed by Don Coscarelli, the man behind the Phantasm series. The story mainly revolves around Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis as Jack, a black man who claims to be John F. Kennedy (he was patched up after the assassination, dyed black, and abandoned.) Some of the other cast include Ella Joyce as The Nurse, Bob Ivy as Bubba Ho-tep, Heidi Marnhout as Callie, Larry Pennell as Kemosabe and Daniel Roebuck and Daniel Schweiger as Hearse drivers. It also features a cameo from Reggie Bannister, the hero of Coscarelli's Phantasm series. The movie was shot in 30 days and the budget was around 1 million and grossed just a little over that. It had a very limited release but obtained cult status by the time it was released on DVD. The title actually comes from a novella by Joe R. Lansdale which originally appeared in the anthology The King Is Dead: Tales of Elvis Post-Mortem. This is a prefect movie for Bruce Campbell fans, Mummy fans and Elvis fans.
Resting in the confines of a Mud Creek, TX, nursing home after fading into obscurity following his departure from the limelight, an aging and embittered Elvis befriends a delusional patient named Jack who claims to be John F. Kennedy. It seems that at the height of his popularity Elvis had switched identities with a convincing double, and, upon the death of the substitute, missed his chance to reclaim his former fame. Despite his anger at never having made a comeback, Elvis finds a new reason to live when Jack tips him off to an evil mummy that is feasting on the souls of hapless nursing home inhabitants. Before long the geriatric duo must muster the strength to fend off the malevolent soul sucker lest they ultimately fall prey to the fearsome Bubba Ho-Tep.
